Following a residency in Internal Medicine, he completed a residency in dermatology at the University of Texas in 1984.

He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Dermatology in addition to being a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Physicians, and the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery.
